Our Company
Vision and Experience You Can Trust
Huxham Golf Design Inc. is a fully diversified international award winning golf course design firm. Darrell and Warren Huxham, the firms two Principals, have 30 years of experience and have been involved in the design of over 50 golf courses worldwide. HGD offers a complete range of services related to the feasibility, design, construction and operational consulting of golf courses. HGD also provides course remodeling services to over 30 existing courses including some of Canada’s most notable golf courses.
HGD principals have worked on golf course projects in countries across the globe, including; Canada, Finland, Italy, Korea, Morocco, The United States and the Caribbean. With international representatives located in Brazil, Korea andMorocco, HGD is able to better serve our clients, provide correspondence in their national languages and deal with project issues in a timely fashion.
We use a common sense, no ego approach and invite our clients to be involved as much or as little as they desire. With the HGD team you will always be impressed with our innovative approach, creativity, competence and attention to detail.
We have designed golf courses in a variety of different geographic locations around the world and have worked on every conceivable site, ranging from sandy sea-side settings to floodplains, to rolling woodland properties to rugged mountain environments. We have also worked in a variety of soil conditions including sand, clay, peat, gravel and rock. These experiences have added to our design diversity and allow us to properly assess each project’s specific needs and assemble the most appropriate construction team. We strive to exceed our client’s expectations and have made this our ongoing philosophy.
Flow with the natural features
On sites that exhibit attractive natural character, HGD believes the golf course should flow with the natural terrain and take advantage of any existing features. With the right routing a golf course can require minimal earthmoving and shaping to create something truly special and timeless. When extensive earth works and shaping are required, we believe in creating natural looking land forms and do not believe in contrived, overly shaped features.
Transformation of an average site
Unfortunately, ideal sites are not always available and it is here that an architect’s competence and imagination can truly be demonstrated. The transformation of an average site into a visually dramatic layout is where we pride ourselves most. Several of our award winning courses, such as Equinelle, were created on somewhat flat sites with limited natural features. On sites of this nature, we take pride in being able to create courses that exhibit impressive visual character, unique memorable holes and exciting strategic shot options.
Visual appeal
HGD prides itself on creating visually stunning, playable golf courses that are a balanced collection of unique and non-repetitive holes. We like to include flowing land forms, expansive water features, contrasting turf varieties and creative bunkering to accent the strategic character of the course. We enjoy creating elevated, centrally located vantage points, where panoramic views and heroic tee shots can be experienced. We believe in making all features and hazards visible, so we can excite and entice the golfer and provide the necessary information to assess strategic shot options or risk-reward challenges.
Appear Challenging, Play Fair
The strategic positioning of greens, tees, water features and bunkers combined with design elements, such as; multiple tee decks, concave fairways, off-set bunkering, amphitheatre green settings and bail zone shot options can create the illusion that the course is difficult, when in reality it can play very fair and be accommodating. La Tempete, host of the 2009 Telus World Skins, is a strong example of a course that exhibits challenging characteristics for the PGA Pro’s, yet is enjoyable and fair to play for the overall membership. We want all players regardless of ability to be enthusiastic and excited about hitting their next shot and feel good after they come off one of our courses.
Design styles and the Marketplace
HGD respects that every course has its own target market and it is vital to its success to develop an appropriate design style. We have designed numerous award winning resort and mountain style courses such as Manoir Richelieu, Le Maitre and Jay Peak. As well as other traditional style membership courses such as Le Fontainebleau and La Tempete. These courses cater to repetitive play by a core membership group. Other styles include public & tournament courses such as Kingswood and Equinelle, where varying maintenance and operational issues have to be addressed. We have also created award winning executive courses and utilized Links style themes to give a course a unique competitive edge when compared to other local courses. We limit our use of Penal designs as they adversely affect speed of play and overall enjoyment which are problematic factors in today’s marketplace.
Stimulating, Challenging and Memorable
We have designed courses of all varieties from executive courses, to mountain courses, to championship layouts that have hosted PGA and Champions Tour Pro’s. Within all these designs HGD believes all golfers regardless of gender or ability should be challenged and rewarded equally. We want the golfer to have enjoyed their round and to want to come back, because the course they have just played was stimulating, challenging and memorable.
