We have built golf courses in a variety of different geographic locations around the world and have worked on every conceivable site, ranging from sandy sea-side settings to floodplains, to rolling woodland properties to rugged mountain environments. We have also worked in a variety of soil conditions including sand, silt, clay, peat, gravel and rock. These experiences have added to our versatility and allow us to properly assess each project's specific needs and assemble the most appropriate construction team. We strive to exceed our client's expectations and have made this our ongoing philosophy.

Design Philosophy

Tailored approaches for every course type and market segment

Golf course design showcase

HGD respects that every course has its own target market and it is vital to its success to develop an appropriate architectural style. We have created numerous award winning resort and mountain style courses such as Manoir Richelieu, Le Maitre and Jay Peak. As well as other traditional style membership courses such as Le Fontainebleau and La Tempete. These courses cater to repetitive play by a core membership group. Other styles include public & tournament courses such as Kingswood and Equinelle, where varying maintenance and operational issues have to be addressed. We have also created award winning executive courses and utilized Links style themes to give a course a unique competitive edge when compared to other local courses. We limit our use of penal approaches as they adversely affect speed of play and overall enjoyment which are problematic factors in today's marketplace.

"Darrell was the lead architect for three of our new golf development projects, namely: Le Maitre Golf Club, Club de Golf Fontainebleau, and Talon Golf Course. Darrell's strengths were at the design stage allowing us to best utilize the land. His ability to execute the project, not only exceeded expectations architecturally, as well, met our budget and achieved schedule. These strengths have vaulted Darrell as an innovator in our industry."

Jim Molenhuis

Senior VP, Golf Development and Turf Operations, ClubLink Corporation

"Warren was instrumental in the development, and particularly, the field design and supervision element of our golf construction. His effort and competence was a leading force throughout the entire process. From start to finish, our expectations were surpassed and we are very satisfied with the end result. I would have no hesitation in recommending Warren and his company for any future golf development work."

Bill Stenger

President, Jay Peak Vermont

"Huxham Golf Design recently designed and managed the construction of my golf course in Québec, Canada. The site was tremendously challenging and I was very impressed with the creative and professional approach in which they handled all the various design, construction and site demands that arose. Throughout the entire process they were a pleasure to work with and upon completion, the course exceeded my expectations from all perspectives. They have a deserved reputation as one of the premier golf course design firms in Canada and came highly recommended."

The Right Honourable Paul Martin

Former Prime Minister of Canada

"Darrell and Warren recently undertook the design and construction supervision of our new 18 hole championship golf facility, La Tempête, in the Quebec City region. We are extremely satisfied with the final product that they have created; it is a very impressive and challenging course, as can be attested by our hosting of the World Skins Game in 2009. I was very impressed with the hands on approach, imagination and strong attention to detail that the Huxhams brought to our project. Their reputation as being one of the premier golf design firms in the country is well deserved, and I highly recommend them for any future golf design work."

What Sets Golf Course Architects Apart

The specialized expertise that transforms land into championship golf experiences

Golf course architecture is a specialized discipline that combines artistic vision with technical engineering, environmental science, and an intimate understanding of the game. Unlike general landscape architects, golf course architects must master the complex interplay between playability, strategy, aesthetics, and maintenance sustainability.

Our team brings earth sciences backgrounds that enable us to read the land—understanding drainage patterns, soil compositions, and microclimates that will determine a course's long-term success. This technical foundation, combined with decades of competitive golf experience, allows us to create courses that challenge skilled players while remaining enjoyable for recreational golfers.

The best golf course architecture respects the natural environment while strategically placing hazards, shaping greens, and routing holes to create memorable playing experiences. Every architectural decision—from bunker placement to green contours—serves both aesthetic and strategic purposes.

Golf course architecture planning and design process

Our Architectural Process

A proven methodology refined over 30+ years of championship course creation

1. Site Discovery

Comprehensive site analysis examining topography, drainage, vegetation, soil conditions, and environmental constraints. We identify opportunities that will define the course's character.

2. Concept Development

Initial routing options exploring how 18 holes flow across the property. We evaluate multiple concepts considering playability, construction costs, and environmental impact.

3. Master Planning

Detailed architectural drawings specifying every feature—green contours, bunker shapes, tee locations, and grading plans that guide construction with precision.

4. Construction & Refinement

Hands-on site supervision ensuring architectural intent translates to reality. We make real-time refinements as the course takes shape, optimizing every detail.

Golf Course Architecture Across Canada

Building for the unique challenges and opportunities of Canadian landscapes

Canadian Climate Expertise

Golf course architecture in Canada demands specialized knowledge that many international firms lack. Our courses must withstand harsh winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and compressed growing seasons while delivering championship-quality playing conditions during the summer months.

We engineer drainage systems that handle spring thaw and heavy rainfall, select turf varieties proven in Canadian climates, and create features that emerge from winter in pristine condition. This expertise comes from 30+ years of building courses from British Columbia to Atlantic Canada.

Regional Adaptations: We understand the distinct requirements of each region—from the rocky Canadian Shield terrain of Ontario to the coastal conditions of Nova Scotia, from Quebec's clay soils to Alberta's prairie landscapes.

Environmental Stewardship: Canadian courses face increasing environmental scrutiny. We build with sustainability in mind, incorporating native plantings, naturalized areas, and water-efficient irrigation systems that satisfy regulators while creating beautiful, playable courses.

Year-Round Considerations: While focused on the playing season, our architecture considers year-round maintenance, equipment access, and winter preparations that affect long-term course health.
